[My Students] 009. Tim Badley's Comment

Peter can help you acheive your goals in Chinese in many ways.

1. He provides you handouts that explain grammatical rules.

2. He explains to you the current usage in Taiwanese daily conversation.
3. He also records for you useful sentences to review later.

**Note by Peter:

Tim is really a proactive and enthusiastic learner. After finishing our trial teaching, he gave me some ideas on my teaching style (see the below article). I printed them out and put it in my teaching file in order to remind myself to notice it when I teach him every time. So I adapted my teaching style to meet his requests, this helped our classes go smoothly.

Private tutoring should be entirely student-oriented and tailor-made. In order to fulfill this, I follow students’ requests and endeavor to meet their needs.

In fact, I welcome all of my students to offer me any suggestions about how they want our teaching to go on. It shows that I care about my students' opinions, and the most important thing is that you are committed to your studies. Being a learner like this, there is no reason you cannot make great progress in your Chinese.

Here are some of my notes from the last session.

1. Don't over teach me. I prefer quality over quantity.
    I want to create sentences rather than have too much vocabulary that I can't use.

2. Try to stick to the book. Even though Taiwanese may use different words,
    I'm trying to create sentences and dialog from the words used from my course.

3. You are doing well.

    For the class, I would like to try this format:
      1) Speak for 15 minutes in Chinese.
      2) Review homework.
      3) Go over grammar.
      4) Preview future lessons; go over March TOP
      5) Review lesson

[My Students] 005. Paul Modlinski's Comment

I've been meeting with Peter for two months now, trying to find out whether he could compete with Mandarin Training Center teachers at National Taiwan Normal University (which, by the way, is the most renowned one in Taiwan) and... I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Peter possesses all the qualities of a great teacher, and, not a bit less important, a friend. He has a deep knowledge of his language, and actually quite in-depth understanding for meanings and usage of words in Chinese (which most of my language exchange partners lack. To teach, one must know both the language and know about the language, Peter has both of those qualities). I've been studying linguistics for 3 years now, and I find Peter's way of explaining things really commendable, as it is both precise and covering a wide range of possible ways to use words and phrases he taught me.

What makes lessons with Peter something I find both worth looking forward and actually helping my Chinese, is the fact that Peter is one of the most driven teachers I've seen in years. Such a genuine passion for teaching and ability to go way out of his way to help his students is an extremely rare combination, a perfect one for a tutor.
On the whole, I really recommend having lessons with Peter, if you're serious about learning the language, he will help you a lot, whether you will only ask him questions or passively let him choose the topics for you. I've been in Taiwan for 6 months now, and I've met a lot of different teachers during my language exchange experience.

Peter definitely is the best so far. And, if you think this whole comment is biased, then simply try Peter out. As far as I know, he offers a number of trial lessons, to see if his style suits you. Take a few of these, and I'm sure that you will find Peter as a good a teacher as I have. That costs you nothing, so go for it.

[My Students] 004. Debbie Rinehart's Comment

Peter's style of teaching is inspiring and creative. He is really eager to listen to what students need and guide them on their way to refining their Chinese skills. He uses humor and a relaxed atmosphere to make students feel at ease. He goes out of his way to find supplemental materials that are authentic(from real life) and relevant to his students interests. He helped me to find the lyrics to many Chinese pop songs(which by the way is a great way to improve)

I studied with Peter for over one month and feel I met my goal, which was to improve my conversation skills. I am currently in a Masters program myself so I no longer have time to study...but as soon as I do I will ask Peter to be my teacher again. Thank you Peter for your patience and generosity.

[My Students] 003. Luis Peralta's Comment

Hi everybody. My name is Luis, I am from Nicaragua and I am a student from MTC Shida.

Let me say you that chinese language is an amazing language that It will open many doors in my future the same way I think It will do the same with everybody wanna learn chinese, I have only one month here living in Taiwan and learning chinese and what better way to learn it with a native like Peter, he was my first friend here and he has taught me many things about chinese language.

Hola a todos, Mi nombre es Luis, soy nicaraguense y estudio en MTC Shida.

Permitanme decirles que el idioma chino-mandarin es un idioma muy interesante
el cual me abrira muchas puertas en mi futuro por esta razón he decidido estudiar esta

Hey mates!

This is Jan, I am student of ShiDa mandarin training centre, coming from the Czech republic.

Firstly let me to say, I am glad I meet such a great guy as Peter undoubtedly is. Since the very beginning he impressed me by his endless enthusiasm and friendliness. He is organized and passionate about his job.

From my point of view, there is evidence he really enjoys teaching Chinese which makes the classes even more interesting and easy to follow. Learning such a difficult language is really hard for me, but with Peter’s attitude towards students I believe I can improve a lot. So far I have found his way of teaching very efficient and entertaining. Peter is open-minded tutor, I am sure he can make “tailor made” teaching schedule for everyone of you.

Ahoj Lidičky!

Jmenuji se Honza a v současné době studuji na ShiDa mandarin training centre, jinak pocházím z České republiky.

Úvodem bych rád mínil, že jsem skutečně rád, že jsem potkal takového fajn týpka jako je Peter! Od samého počátku mě Peter udivil svým entusiasmem a přátelskostí. Z toho co jsem poznal se Peter jeví jako člověk se na sobě hodně pacuje a dělá vše proto, aby se stal profesionálním lektorem čínštiny. Být učitelem si vyloženě užívá, což výuku čínštiny dělá mnohem zajímavější a mnohdy ji i díky tomu lépe snáze pochopíte. Studium tak náročého jazyka je pro mě skutečně nelehké, ale s Peterovým přístupem je to hned o něčem jiném a věřím, že tímto způsobem se mohu podstatně zlepši, což se mi již prokázalo. Hodiny shledávám velmi effektivní a zábavné. Peter je lektor, který vám ušije vyuku doslova “na míru” co se týče způsobu výuky a rozvrhu hodin, tedy mohu jeho služby jedině doporučit!

★Week Teaching Schedule

1. Reasons:

Because more and more students want to have trial Chinese lessons with me, I decided to use this form -"Week Teaching Schedule".I believe this schedule will not only be beneficial for me, but also for all my students. Firstly, you can reserve your lessons by emailing me; it is very convenient. Secondly, you can utilize your time more efficiently; because you will know when you will have your lessons much earlier.

2. Instructions:

Now, I will explain to you how to do it, it is very simple!

(1) I have already had some regular Chinese lessons with some students. So if you see "Trial Teaching" (red words) on the schedule. It means at those times, I have already made appointments with my students for Chinese lessons.

(2) The "Unconfirmed Time" on the schedule (blue words) means that I am still arranging my schedule. Maybe two or three students want to have Chinese lessons at the same time, or I have something to do at that time, I am still confirming.

(3) You will also see these different color blanks that represent each meaning as follows:

　　　　The best time for me to arrange my class.

　　　　The second-best time for me to arrange my class.

　　　　The time reserved for myself.

(4) Under every Week Teaching Schedule, I will note "Updated Time". If I have any change on my schedule (less often), or I add Chinese lessons with my students (more often); I will update my schedule right away and note what time I update it.

(5) Reserve Lessons: When you want to have your Chinese lessons, I suggest that you choose two or three different times (it can let me arrange time flexibly). Then, write an email to me, let me arrange them. I will reply to you for what times next week we can have our Chinese lessons as soon as possible. And when we are in our Chinese lessons, I will also confirm with you that these times are conveient for you or not. If not , we can find other times.

(6) Cancel Lessons: If you have some urget things so that you want to cancel your Chinese lessons, you just write an email to me earlier one or two days before our Chinese lessons. BUT, if it is the day that we will have our Chinese lessons; please send a message to me, or phone me. Otherwise, I will waste my time on waiting you.

3. Purpose:

We are not in the language centers or schools, so we have the right to arrange our Chinese lessons flexibly. My purpose is to let every student has his Chinese lesson at regular, fixed time. Let all of you know, arrange and adjust your lessons more easily. Therefore; not only you but also I can utilize time well.

6 hours 1 day 一天六小時

I taught 3 different groups of students today; 2 hours for 1 group and 6 hours in total.

It is my ideal goal to have this amount of teaching hour everyday! And today is my first day to achieve this goal! So it is worthy to write down to record it!

I also started to post my trial Chinese teaching photos on my blog. These students are from Nicaragua and they are very studious. (Keep going! Guys! You are improving,)
I will post more and more photos like these in the near future because it can proof my each Chinese teaching case.

Moreover, I will invite my students to write down their feelings and opinions about learning Chinese with me. Thus, I can examine my teaching way, and improve it time after time.

今天我一共教了三組學生。一組二小時，一共六小時。

這是我理想中的一個星期教學時數，剛好就是今天！
是我第一次達成這個目標！所以當然是值得把它紀錄下來啊！

Confidence & Blue Sea 自信和藍海

Yesterday I did my 3rd time trial Chinese teaching with an American student. She shared her Chinese learning experience with me as follows:

1. Many foreign students really need good Chinese teachers to teach them Chinese in an interesting and effective way.

2. To be confident! If I think I am a qualified Chinese teacher, I don’t have to set very low tuition fee, and give students too many free lessons. Because students will doubt my teaching ability, and think my teaching is worthless.

3. On the contrary, I have to improve my teaching ability, to design more creative and attractive teaching ways, so that students can study with me more effectively and efficiently.

I really appreciated her precious opinions.

I believe there will be more and more Chinese teachers in the future, just like English teachers at present. And at that time, the tuition fee of Chinese teachers will be likely to get lower and lower. To develop greater teaching skills and accumulate more teaching experience will be the only way to attract more students. I expect myself to seek the Blue Sea in the Red, and do not use the way lowering tuition to attract students.

今天我跟一位美國學生做了第三次的試教。她跟我分享了一些她學習中文的經驗如下：

１、很多外國學生真需要好的中文老師，要用有趣也有效的教學方式去教他們。

２、要有自信！如果我覺得我是夠格的中文老師，其實我不用一直去把我的教學價格往下殺，也不要一直給學生上免費的課，因為這樣學生會懷疑我的教學能力，也不會認為我的中文課是值得上的。

３、相反地，我應該不斷的提升自己能力，去想一些教學方法，讓學生學得更有效率，達到更好的學習效果。

非常非常地謝謝她寶貴的意見！

我想未來中文老師會愈來愈多，就會跟英文老師一樣的泛濫也說不定。到時，中文教學的價格是否也會一直地下殺呢？如果是，那不就是人家用削價競爭來形容市場的紅海嗎？

但，我還是相信一位富有教學經驗且懂得教學的好老師仍然會有他自己的市場，就像殺得一片紅海裡的藍海一樣。因此，我要以成為一位藍海老師為自我的期許！

I'm busy for? 我在忙什麼?

Today I did my second time trial Chinese teaching with quite a few South-American students. Yes, quite a few, almost ten students! I seldom faced some many students. I divided them into several groups which consisted of two people, and taught them in turn. Most of them have just learned Chinese for three months, and wanted me to help them review Hanyu Pinyin. I don’t think that teaching or learning Chinese pronunciation is an easy task. Even though Taiwanese can speak Chinese fluently, not everyone can pronounce each Chinese phonetic alphabet precisely. After coming home, I read books and thought how to teach student Chinese pronunciation more effectively. Especially, I knew a few Chinese phonetic alphabet were difficulty for students to pronounce.

Another good thing was that my best friend, Rodman Lu visited my blog, and gave me some suggestions. I really thanked his kindness and ideas.

I know I still have a lot of things to do; and actually, I am very busy recently. Do you know what I am busy for?

1. Finding students
2. Finding textbooks and teaching materials
3. Listening Chinese teaching lectures
4. Teaching students
5. Blogging
6. Designing teaching record form

...and so on…

All things are difficult before they are easy~~

I know there will be more and more students or visitors come to my blog to find information. And I just start my teaching business. Please give me some time and you will see more interesting things here.

今天我跟了好幾位的南美同學做了我第二次的中文試教。對，真的是好幾位，有快十位了！這或許會是我這陣子面對最多學生的一次。我把他們分成兩人，兩人一組，然後開始跟他們車輪戰。

他們才學了中文三個月，想要我加強他們的發音。說實在的，不要小看中文的發音，我回家後馬上再做研究，看要怎麼教他們分清楚這些難發的音。

我的好朋友──小呂最近造訪我的部落格，也給我一些建議。很謝謝他！

First Time 第一次

Today I started to do my first time trial Chinese teaching with an European student. I was very lucky to teach him. He had some basic Chinese level; and he was really a nice and studious guy. I truly thanked him to give me this opportunity. It was always uneasy to make the first step, but I have made it.

When I was teaching him, I got some ideas about teaching. It also let me recall how I studied in language schools. And after finishing our course, I was keeping thinking about how I should design my own teaching plans and set up my own teaching methods. Yes! My own way! Definitely!

今天跟我第一個試教的學生開始了我的中文試教教學。我很幸運能教到他。他是一個很好也很好學的人，基本的中文程度還滿不錯的，也很感謝他給我這樣的機會！第一步總是不容易的，但是我做到了！

從他身上，我得到一些關於教學的啟發。也讓我想到以前在語言學校時，我是怎麼上課。而在結束教學之後，我也不斷在思考，我該要怎麼樣去設計我的教學課程和教學方法－－「一套屬於我自己的方式」。所有的心得我已經至頂，請見－－「我的教學方法」系列。

Just Do It! 做就對了嘛!

1. Passing out my business cards

This afternoon, I went to Shida to pass out my business cards to foreign students.

Although someone may felt strange at what I was doing, I told myself that I just wanted to help them learn Chinese. For them, they could learn Chinese, and for me, I could accumulated my experience of teaching Chinese. It was like a mutual assistance, and unnecessary to think it so complicatedly.

I passed out my business cards to around 10 foreign students in three hours. All of them were friendly, but I was not sure whether they really wanted to do a trial Chinese teaching with me or not. I just knew what I wanted to do was to help other people, so I didn’t care about someone’s judgment.

2. Renewing my blog

After coming home, I renewed my blog; and added some photos that I took when I studied abroad in order to prove what I wrote on the CV. Speak truly, I can understand that everyone has self-defense and perhaps some of them may guess my motive about free trial Chinese teaching. However; if I intend to do something , I can just hind my profile. In fact, on the contrary, you can see that I have revealed lots of my personal information; and I believe that it is enough to show my sincerity.

So….JUST DO IT!!

一、發名片，找外國學生：

今天帶著自己訂作的名片去師大發。

雖然這樣的主動出擊，可能有點奇怪。但是我告訴自己：我是去幫助他們這些外國學生的，他們學到中文，我累積到教中文的經驗，說穿了，就是互相幫助而己，沒有什麼大不了的。

後來在那的三個多小時，我發了快十張名片給不同的外國學生。他們大部份都很友善，至於他們要不要找我教，那就看個人的意願。很多事我們只要堅持我們的出發點是正確的那就好，不用太去在意別人的眼光。

二、更新部落格

回家後，我更新了我部落格，加了一些我在國外的照片，為的是更取信於人。其實每個人都會有防心，這些拿到我名片的人，可能也會去猜測我的動機。但說真的，我已經在網誌上透露了很多我私人的事，如果我有什麼不單純的動機，想必我不會透露這麼多事。所以，你們要就趕快哦！！
