Peter is an exceptional teacher who was able to fit lessons to my personal needs and to my current level of knowledge. 

He makes the classes interesting with many practical sentences always fitted to my profession and interests, he never runs out of ideas for new conversation topics. 

Chinese grammar was easy to understand with Peter's explanation since he shows examples from a daily life. 

He always pays attention to the right pronunciation and tones and he knows common mistakes of students and even native speakers and teaches how to avoid them.

Peter has a big knowledge of Chinese culture, traditions and customs and includes that it his classes. 

He was always prepared for our lessons with different materials and handouts and also provided me with other resources for learning Chinese. 

Because of my lack of time he always tried to make me get the most out the class in a short time and he was very patient with me and understanding.

While living in Taiwan for one year, I was fortunate to have taken Mandarin lessons from Peter Su for about 2 hours each week. Initially, I was hesitant to start up lessons, because I was not sure if I would be able to learn a significant amount of an entirely new language in such a short time. Boy, was I wrong!

Peter has an excellent style, and caters his lessons to the needs and strengths of each student. Up front, Peter asks what each students’ goals are, and tweaks his lessons accordingly. If the student is unsure, Peter is able to take lead and teach from his standard lessons plan. No matter the level of experience (I had none), Peter is able to understand how much to challenge each student to ensure maximum success and succeed. His experience is evident in his teaching process.

In addition to being able to accommodate students of all levels, Peter’s approach to teaching is unique in that he goes above the call of duty. Each student is not just another means of payment, or an extra few hours of work. Peter gets to know each student individually and is able to connect with them because of his friendly personality. Whether by teaching foreign students about local culture and customs, or by simply offering to chat and laugh in a new café, Peter’s personality resonates with his students. At the end of my year in Taiwan, Peter, myself, and a few of my American friends rented bicycles and we rode around the city together, capturing our final views and tourist spots of the beautiful city of Taipei. This is more than I would expect from a language tutor.

Though I was skeptical at first, I am eternally grateful that I took Mandarin lessons with Peter. Not only did it make me more successful at my job in Taiwan since I was able to speak with and email non-English speaking co-workers, but I have been able to maintain an elementary fluency and converse with Chinese speakers back home over 1 year later. For anyone on the fence, I strongly recommend Chinese lessons with Peter!

I studied Mandarin with Peter for just over a year, and found him to be not only an excellent and rigorous teacher, but also an informative ambassador to help me navigate, understand, and appreciate the culture of Taiwan.

I moved to Taiwan from California in 2012 to work for a Taiwanese company. All of my coworkers spoke Mandarin, and the business was all done in Mandarin. While I could get along without it, clearly I needed to learn the language to succeed in the job.

When I first found Peter, I had been taking classes at a local university to learn basic Mandarin. The class format wasn’t working well for me because I was traveling a lot for work and missing lessons along the way. I started interviewing individual tutors that could be more flexible with their schedule. My first impression of Peter was that he is a serious, hardworking tutor, and he would encourage me to be the same as a student. This impression proved immediately to be correct. His lessons followed a framework set up by the most popular series of Mandarin learning books, but went far beyond with weekly written lessons teaching context and language about real-world events, places, and things that would immediately be useful to me at work and out in the world. The combination of the two, along with Peter’s always-available readiness answer questions quickly started opening doors for me and helping me understand the new culture in which I was living. My language skills increased so rapidly that supervisor at work would proudly show off my spoken and written language to his friends and clients.

As I continued to work with Peter, our relationship grew larger than the simple teacher/student arrangement we started with. His openness and enthusiasm led us out of the classroom and into sharing experiences in the real world. We would try out different coffee shops and practice our language there, he would tell me about unique cultural sites and events to visit, and sometimes visit them together. In a moment of truly unique cultural blending, he invited me to join him and his friends at a local Taipei professional baseball game. It was an amazing experience to see the game, so rich in American tradition, played out with the same rules but a completely different set of traditions in the grandstands. A great deal of fun to discuss the differences of American games vs. Taiwanese games. I hope to be able to return the favor one day and take Peter to a game here in the USA.
I’ve moved back to the USA now, profoundly changed from my time living abroad as anyone would be. Looking back at it as I often do, I can clearly see the two different experiences- before I started working with Peter the culture seemed opaque and the simplest exchanges with people was riddled with misunderstanding and difficulty. After meeting Peter, things started making senses, people opened up, and life became a whole lot easier. I give him so much credit for working hard, pushing me, and having patience and diligence to help me understand how and why to speak the local language. I hope he has the opportunity to share that experience with many, many more students and colleagues.

Peter was teaching me intermediate Mandarin for about half a year in 2013. It is my pleasure to provide this letter of recommendation for Peter because I’m still benefiting from what he had taught me and I think he is a highly skilled language teacher.

Peter knows all the basics of teaching Mandarin and in his lessons he goes far beyond what other teachers usually do. During our lessons he was making notes of the new vocabulary and grammar constructions so that I could review it as homework. He did not stick to the textbook all the time but added useful information about how Taiwanese people speak in their everyday lives.

Moreover, he taught me a lot about Taiwanese history and culture and even recommended restaurants and sightseeing spots to me. To sum up I can say that thanks to my improved Mandarin skills and all other things Peter taught me he contributed a lot to me feeling at home in Taipei.

I would love to recommend Peter Su as a Chinese teacher and tutor! Peter tutored me in Chinese for a little less than a year. I was working full time, and Peter was very flexible in meeting me for a couple hours in the evening each week to help me improve my Chinese.

Peter always arrived completely prepared for the lesson. Even though my Chinese skills were very poor and the words and phrases I was learning were basic, Peter found ways to vary the material so that it was engaging, appropriately challenging, and never repetitive. I was never bored during our lessons!

Peter was very patient with me, and often adapted lessons to suit my everyday needs of living and working in Taipei. I grasped vocabulary and grammar lessons more quickly when I was able to use them in the context of my normal life (ex: describing my apartment, or sharing about my family back home). Peter easily kept our lessons on track, but always made time for my questions and the occasional deviation into talking about the local culture. Peter’s English is excellent as well, so he was able to explain difficult language concepts to me when my Chinese comprehension wasn’t adequate.

Other people say that Mandarin is one of the difficult languages to learn. But Peter proved that wrong.

Back there when I was in Taiwan, Peter taught me the easiest but effective way to learn Chinese. His teachings can cope with what his students’ language status and needs. I never skip a single class with him because I know every time I meet him I will learn a lot. And it does. I'm able to speak and understand Mandarin well. Another thing what I've liked with him is that I don't feel bored on his class. I always enjoy when I’m in his class. He didn't rely only on his teaching materials, rather he always use our surroundings in the place where he teaches me and even adopt his teaching in my own workplace which makes my learning curved faster. During that time I do have a hectic and long working hours every day, and it feels that while learning, it also serves as a stress reliever for me.

I know Peter from a Free Chinese Program that had been held by Chinese Department of Chinese Culture University in Taipei. It was one semester period at the end of 2012, but it was worth it. I was one in the intermediate class for Chinese conversation with around other ten foreign students.

I never thought that learn Chinese could be so much fun, thanks to Peter Su that introduced very attractive and interactive methods in learning Chinese. Not only he prepared an interesting topic to be discussed every week, but also he provided us with useful handouts, websites to encourage self-learning and sometimes playing games that help us practiced the grammars and characters.

I remember Peter as a cheerful and friendly teacher who loves to interact with his students. Although the program that I joined was “free”, but never I found Peter taught carelessly, 𑁋neither did I take this program for granted.  And yes, I made a good improvement in my Chinese speaking from his class. He cares about his students, very patient and opens to any questions and discussions in case of any of us have a problem in the learning process.

I graduated from the University of Texas (Austin) with a B.A. in Linguistics and shortly there-after came to Taiwan. When I was looking for a Chinese tutor, I decided to on Peter because his email that he sent me in reply to my post on tealit.com was well-organized, with many links to his page and others. He seemed to language exchanges, relationships come from it, and I was serious about learning Chinese. Peter is serious about teaching it.
我從美國的德州大學語言學系畢業之後就到台灣來了。我找中文家教的時候，因為Peter寄的email跟另外家教寄的比起來，我覺得他寫的比較好。聽說語言交換有時候會帶來愛情，不過我很認真想要學習中文，所以我決定跟Peter學，因為他也很認真教書。

Peter is a great tutor. He started off with a free trial lesson and then we discussed how I might go about studying Chinese. I ended up using the Shida books. They are a good series, but it’s really good to have the guidance of someone to help you through them.
Peter是非常棒的家教。我們開始的時候，他給我一次免費的課。後來我們討論我怎麼在最短的時間學好中文。我選的書是師大國語中心用的書，雖然它們很好用，可是上家教課對你中文的學習更好也更有幫助。

Peter is great because he adjusted to my schedule, as well as my level and pace of learning the language. He helped me achieve some of the goals I had for learning Chinese and pushed me when I was slacking. In the 10 months that I have studied Chinese with Peter, I have finished the first two books and I’m currently on the last lesson of the third book – while working full time during the day and trying to maintain a social life outside of work and study. It’s hard, but it is possible.

Above being a great tutor, he is a great person. He is amiable, patient and a good friend. He took me to a few places aside from our tutor sessions and I got to know Taipei a little better.

I was recently accepted into the National Cheng Kung University in Tainan to study a degree plan. Peter was very helpful when I was filling out the application, as well as writing my autobiography in Chinese, which he helped me correct and improve. By his recommendation, I was also able to receive a scholarship for full tuition and room. I can’t recommend Peter enough for being a top-notch tutor.

Learning can be quite difficult for speakers of western languages. There are many difficult aspects (writing, tones, pronunciation) but the best advice I can give is broken down for each part. I do not think that reading is very difficult for one reason, writing is much harder. The easiest way to learn to read is to learn to write it, no question! WRITE WRITE WRITE WRITE! I practice writing while I am watching television programs, sometimes. It is a mindless task of repetition and repetition of the word as you write, but your remember much more, much faster this way. For tones, the most I can offer is practice. I personally cannot hear tones (that takes a separate type of practice) but I can produce them and that is more important I think for a non-native speaker, so a native speaker can understand you. For pronunciation, I am not talking of tones, I am talking about the sounds of the language, a very important part that must be distinguished at the beginning. If not done at the very beginning, it can be harder to hear later. Since Chinese has a much more limited soundscape than English and many other western languages, I would suggest practice the sounds a lot. And because the sound is similar, try not to slip back into the normal sound of your own language, but try to get the right sound from the start.
中文的學習對西方人可能是困難也很麻煩的。中文的學習有很多方面，寫字，發音，聲調什麼的，所以我跟你們各個分享我的學習的經驗。我覺得寫字跟看字比起來，寫字比較難，因為如果你可以寫字，就會看字。練習寫字最好的方法是寫字，寫字，寫字！！！ 有時候我練習寫著，看電視。是一個不用想太多的做事，只要記住！你寫的越多，你寫的越快。中文的聲調很難也很麻煩。我覺得我聽不清楚中文的聲調，但是我會發音，會發音對母語是中文的人者比較重要。中文語言裡能發的音跟西方語言的比起來，中文真的比較少。 所以你得常常練習。很重要的是記得這不是你的母語，所以如果妳的母語有很像的音，可能是不同的發音。最好是從你開始學的時候，試試看不用你母語的音說中文字，好不好。

我今年來臺灣是爲了比較密集地學習中文，但是因為沒有錢和時間去大學的語言中心上課，所以我跟Peter學中文。我已經跟他學了五個月的中文了，自從跟他上課以後，我的中文進步了不少。

不少的一對一的家教學習會形成無效的聊天，至少我以前的一對一學習是這樣的。但是Peter很認真，很專業，很有組織。我們用《看報學中文》這本書上課，每次一邊上課，他一邊幫我寫補充的生詞、語法和成語。這張筆記記錄了我們那天上課學到了什麽，所以這樣的學習很有效。

我學中文也是為了做人類學的博士研究，因爲他知道我的論文研究是有關於臺灣的歷史社會，所以他很認真地把一些資料介紹給我認識學習。另外，他發現了我寫句子的語法不夠正確，就介紹這本適合我的書，《漢語病句辨析９００例》給我。

Peter蠻專業的，不管你是初學者還是中高級的學習者，他都會看你的中文程度來調整你的課程，幫助你學習中文！

I came to Taiwan this year in order to do intensive Chinese study. However, because of a lack of money and a lack of time (on account of work), I was unable to attend a college language program. I was lucky to work with Peter instead. I studied with him for a year, and I made a lot of improvement.

Too many tutoring relationships can turn into ineffective chatting, or at least that has been my experience. But Peter was extremely dedicated, organized and professioinal about his teaching. We used Reading Newspaper Chinese as a textbook, but for every lesson,Peter also provided lots of extra words, grammer and proverbs.He would write these all down for me in a very organized fashion, so I always had someathing to review. Every class produced a productive written record, and because he did the writing, I was able to focus on speaking in class, and practice writing on my own time. Very efficient and effective.

I was studying Chinese in order to do research on Taiwan's history and society for my anthropology degree I am currently pursuing at Brown University. Peter was very good at putting in the effort to introduce me to materials I would find interesting for my research.

Also, because my written Chinese grammer was not very good, he introduced me to a book called 900 Common Mistakes in Chinese.

Peter is very professional, and no matter whether you are a beginner or advanced, he is good at adjusting the right level. I can't recommend him enough.

Although I was studying Chinese at the National Taiwan University, I was only able to study for a few short months. I found Peter in order to augment my Chinese learning and I feel learning from him was well worth it.

我在台灣大學學中文只有幾個月。我跟Peter一起練習中文。我覺得跟他學習很值得。

Peter is a very good language teacher. His accent is very clear, he is very knowledgeable, and he obviously cares about his students. He had little difficulty in understanding my meaning even when I said things completely wrong.

Petr是個很好的語言老師。他的口音很清楚。他對中文教學的了解很多，也很體貼他的學生。我說錯字的時候，他還是了解我的意思。

I believe his classes are very comparable to a Chinese Learning program at a university. When working with Peter, it's one teacher to one student, which has obvious advantages. The class scheduling is much more flexible and the class contents are also much more flexible. You can specify whatever you want to learn, the speed you want to learn it at, and how you want to learn it. Or you can let Peter decide the class curriculum himself.

我覺得他的課跟我在台大上的課一樣有意思。跟Peter學習是一對一，所以有很大的幫助。他上課的時間跟內容都可以配合你的需要。你可以選擇你想學的內容，學習的速度快慢和教法，或者你可以讓Peter幫你決定。

Peter was able to explain difficult concepts very well. In an early meeting, he asked me to tell him if there was anything I wanted to learn. At the time I couldn't of anything, so we used his prepared lessons. Later, I told him that during my personal studies, I was having difficulties understanding the difference between the dào, zháo, and liào resultive endings. The textbook was not clear enough and all my Chinese speaking friends told me different rules. Peter responded to my class by preparing a custom lesson for our next few sessions.

Peter能夠解釋複雜的語法觀念。當我們第一次見面的時候，他問我我有沒有想學些什麼，當時我沒有什麼特別的想法，所以我就照著他的建議學。後來，我告訴他我不了解「到」、「著」和「了」這幾個字的用法，因為《實用視聽華語》課本上的解釋和其他台灣朋友告訴我的用法都不一樣。Peter也特別在接下來的幾堂課準備講義來教我。

First, he explained the difficulties of the words and how different Chinese speaking areas used them differently. Using the resultive endings correctly and using them as they were naturally spoken in Taiwan were different matters. This explained why my friends gave me conflicting information. After giving an overview of the correct usages, he brought out the worksheets he prepared. The first set was reading examples of naturally spoken use that he had me read out loud. The second set was a fill in the blank worksheet, which I also read out loud and completed. We filled in the blanks with all correct possible endings and noted the naturally spoken endings. There were many, many sentences to work through and by the end, I finally felt like I understood this concept that had been difficult for me.

I have taken Chinese lessons from Peter for 6 months. Whether you are already studying Chinese and need extra help or are working and don’t have time to enroll in a language school, I strongly recommend Peter. He is extremely flexible and will work to fit your specific learning needs.

Prior to studying with Peter, I had been doing language exchange with my Taiwanese coworkers. When a new teacher joined the language exchange, we started from square one leading me to search for a more serious teacher. If you are unsure about taking lessons, Peter offers free trial lessons, which allow you to get a feel for his teaching methods and level of professional teaching. I can honestly say I learned more in just those first trial lessons than in a few months of language exchange.

One of Peter’s greatest strengths is orienting his teaching individual students’ goals. He often asks for student’s opinions and suggestions and participates in teacher training to continually improve his teaching methods. Peter helped me to identify my learning goals and choose a book suitable to my language level. In addition, he provided a lot of supplemental hands out which really helped to increase my vocabulary. I feel Peter has really researched Chinese language learning and takes his job seriously. He borrows materials from the library as well as other students in order to provide students with practical and authentic learning materials.

In addition, he frequently updates his blog with useful language learning and cultural links. Peter is also very patient and can use English to explain more difficult grammar points if necessary. Peter not only explains grammatical points but also helps you to use grammatical patterns in daily conversation.

Overall Peter is a hardworking, enthusiastic, and flexible teacher. Studying with Peter will really help you to improve your Chinese, no matter what level.
