[My Students] 014. James Baldwin's Comment

Peterson Su, for me, has been an excellent teacher as well as an inspiration. In teaching, he is very organized in setting learning goals for each student and in thoroughly preparing materials dedicated to each student's unique goals in studying Chinese. Additionally, Peterson is well adept at going through each and every Chinese word and explaining their pronunciation, usage, meaning and even it's etymology.

Personally, I have also found Peterson to be a bit inspirational in his teaching ability. He is dead-set on making certain my Chinese ability improve and is able to correctly inform me of where my strong and weak points are in my Chinese abilities, and he is more than willing to go far and wide to answer any of my questions no matter how small.

I have been very impressed with Peterson thus far and I have made much progress in improving my Chinese in receiving teaching from him. If you are looking for an effective one on one teacher then look no further than Peterson Su.

中央社 - 華語熱不缺席 台灣文化吸引遊學 99.05.09

隨著中國大陸興起，海外越來越多學生瘋華語，各大學華語中心及業者看準海外學生暑假夏令營市場，紛紛打出小而美的華語學習及台灣文化體驗行程迎戰，盼獲得海外學生的青睞。

台灣有不少學生暑假到歐美參加英語夏令營。風水輪流轉，海外吹起中國風，學生圈也掀起華語熱潮，面對中國大陸推出結合世博的夏令營以及同鄉會贊助的低價夏令營競爭，台灣各大學華語中心和業者紛紛推出體驗台灣文化行程迎戰。

台灣歷史最悠久極富盛名的台灣師範大學國語教學中心，非常受海外學生的青睞，澳洲總理陸克文也曾在此學中文。海外家長們聲聲催，中心終於在幾年前開辦華語夏令營，每年僅提供160個名額，往往開放報名半小時內就額滿。

師大國語教學中心夏令營為期3禮拜，除傳統課程外，還有功夫、扯鈴、藍染、台灣美食、台灣茶藝、捏麵人、剪紙與舞龍舞獅等才藝課程；此外，週末還安排坪林製茶體驗、故宮與陽明山巡禮等，欣賞天然美景，領略中華文化，儘管要價1150美元，且不含住宿與晚餐，還是廣受家長歡迎。

師大國語教學中心主任周中天分析原因表示，學生能來台灣實際體驗中華文化，機票、住宿加上課程的費用，與在美國當地的夏令營差不多，有些家長還可以順便「回家」，因此家長非常樂意把孩子送回來；但限於空間以及維持師資品質，中心不打算增加名額。

位於南台灣文化古都的成功大學，占有地利之便，有台灣最負盛名的古蹟赤崁樓、安平古堡、孔廟等，宛如1部活生生的台灣史。南台灣和煦的陽光，生活消費又較低，許多國外大學生上完課，便騎著腳踏車體驗台灣文化，也可以乘竹筏遊潟湖，南台灣的熱情及特殊地貌，成為外籍生回國口耳相傳的回憶，也吸引更多外籍生來台南。

成大沒有辦夏令營，而是由國外教師或學生自行組團，和成大共同討論上課內容，除了正規的華語班級，通常還有書法、國畫、篆刻、拓碑、天燈等中華文化體驗課程，週末則安排古蹟巡禮以及七股潟湖遊等活動，吸引美國、法國、俄國、日本、南韓的學生到台南。

成大華語中心主任吳榮富表示，成大提供的不只是華語而已，而是整個文化課程，因此來成大的外籍生反應都不錯，回去還會再推薦同學過來。

除了學校的華語中心，聯合報系也推出「瘋華語」夏令營，今年舉辦第2屆。聯合報系教育事業部總經理駱焜祺表示，美國世界日報刊登不少中國華語夏令營的廣告，有的主打低價，也有主題行程，面對中國競爭，台灣除了民主自由社會外，還有獨特的台灣文化，是吸引外國學生的關鍵。

他進一步表示，夏令營強調做中學、學中做，而今年學生會全台走透透，已經吸引美國、加拿大、日本、義大利、德國、法國、泰國等國家學生報名，宛如小小聯合國。

駱焜祺舉例，學員可以從彩繪戲偶到現場操偶短劇表演，體驗台灣傳統布袋戲；也會讓學員下田體驗種稻，品嚐手工飯糰，體驗米食文化；還安排學員徒步溯溪，一起體驗台灣特殊地貌。

台灣保存中華文化最完整，加上自由開放的社會，台灣在華語市場中不能缺席。面對中國大陸的競爭，台灣除了保有華語教學最悠久的傳統優勢外，體驗台灣本土文化也是吸引外國學生的關鍵，台灣社會也應該致力保存特有的台灣文化，發展台灣的軟實力。
